JCT Editing Policy on JCT Contracts Digital Service

JCT Contracts Digital Service, which is produced and maintained by Sweet & Maxwell, enables amendments to be made to JCT standard contracts and a project specific contract to be produced. For the benefit of users generally, amendments are only permitted within a strictly controlled environment:

  1. the highlighted portion of the contract cannot be edited, e.g. section number and heading, clause number and heading, so that the structure of JCT standard contracts is maintained;
  2. any changes to JCT text are shown tracked in the final copy of the contract, so that it is ensured that users are absolutely clear as to where changes have occurred, thus assisting risk management and reducing the transaction cost of entering into a contractual agreement.

It is hoped that amendments would only be made where essential, so that the benefit provided by an industry standard is maintained.

Standard contracts are for the benefit of the construction industry and its users, and to resort regularly to producing bespoke contracts is to promote confusion and to increase inefficiency. Consequently, JCT Contracts Digital Service is not an authoring tool.
